Implant-Supported Dentures Improve Appearance, Health, and Quality of Life

Living with missing teeth has negative consequences on your appearance, nutrition, and oral health. Most patients feel apprehensive to share their smile if there are gaps and empty spaces left by lost teeth. Fortunately, Dr. Art Carpenter is able to both place and restore dental implants at his Kenilworth, IL, office so you can experience the entire implant-supported dentures treatment under one roof. Once the process is complete, you can expect to enjoy your favorite foods again, speak with improved clarity, and live with enhanced confidence and quality of ilife.

What Are Implant-Supported Dentures?

An implant-supported denture is simply a denture that is supported by dental implants instead of the gums. Traditional dentures are designed to rest on top of the gums and can be removed for cleaning and preservation. Unfortunately, traditional dentures commonly slip out of place and may not offer a very lifelike appearance. When dentures are supported by implants, they are secure and do not slip or shift when speaking or eating.

Implant-supported dentures are directly affixed to the jaw using titanium posts.

You can receive implant dentures either on your upper or lower jaw. Typically, the lower jaw provides more support, but our dentists can also provide both bone grafts and sinus lifts to strengthen and make room in the upper jaw. If you need to undergo a graft, the material will be placed in spaces where the bone is weakened. Over time, the grafting material fuses with your natural bone to provide a foundation capable of integrating an implant.

Implant-Supported Dentures Process

Achieving a fully restored smile begins with an in-depth consultation with Dr. Carpenter. During this initial exam, your dentist will evaluate your teeth, gums, and jaw to determine whether you are a candidate for traditional or implant-supported dentures, or a different restorative dentistry option. We will also use advanced digital imaging technology to determine the best area to place the implants.

When dentures are supported by implants, they are secure and do not slip or shift when speaking or eating.

During a minor surgery, Dr. Carpenter will insert four or more implants into your jaw. The procedure is simple and straightforward, and the doctor will administer local anesthesia to ensure your comfort. We can also provide dental sedation to help anxious patients achieve optimal relaxation. A temporary denture is typically attached immediately following placement of the posts. After a healing period of four to six months, you will return to our office and your permanent restoration will be attached.

Weighing Your Treatment Options

While traditional dentures are best for some patients, such as those with autoimmune disorders or financial constraints, implant-supported restorations offer unique advantages. During a process called osseointegrationbone fuses around the implant posts to permanently lock them in place. Further, the implants continuously stimulate the jawbone, preventing bone atrophy, which can prevent the need for more extensive restorative procedures in the future.
