COVID-19 Update and Letter From The Practice

Our Offices Are Now Open

As we monitor the COVID-19 situation, we have updated our preventative measures to protect patients and staff.

View the: Enhanced Patient Protection Plan or call the office at (847) 251-5004  for more information.

Hope everyone is staying healthy and not been overly stressed with all the challenges we have all had over the last two months. Fortunately none of us or our families have had their health directly effected by COVID - 19. For those of you that have had any deaths or sickness in your family and friends we empathize with your pain or loss. For those of you that have had your livelihood and business effected and felt the humiliation and frustration of being told the hard work you have done to further your career and support yourself and your family is considered an extremely insulting term “non essential” we understand your frustration. What we are going through is not the “new normal” it is what we have to endure for now but we are all starting the road back to normalcy that we all crave.

We are considered essential healthcare business so we have been open and have seen many of you. We were only open to see patients with pain, infection, swelling and trauma. Under guidance from the Illinois Department of Public Health we are now clear to resume a full range of dental services. We will highlight temporary changes on the included overview page. We will have a backlog of patients for awhile so if you were one of the hundreds of our guests who had their appointments cancelled with no future appointment made we will be contacting you.

I realize more than ever that all of us at the office miss everyone dearly and it has been difficult not using the talents we have been given to serve you. I just turned 50 and now I definitely realize I am nowhere near retirement and not close to being ready. For now dropping into our office to talk, read magazines, grabbing a cup of coffee is not possible. Hugs and handshakes are gone for now too but we will not live in a dehumanized society void of human touch forever.

Since we are a small boutique dental office we are uniquely qualified to thrive during the shadow of COVID - 19. We are not a clinic so we do not see multiple patients at once and we have private enclosed treatment rooms. As a dentist I have always practiced under universal precautions so the steps we have always had the proper protocol in place but we are enhancing and taken further precautions above and beyond what the Center for Disease Control recommends. Your safety and our dedicated staff’s safety is and always will be our top priority.

It is understandable if some of you still have concerns or health issues that cause you concern. Feel free to ask any questions about our cleanliness and enhanced infection control protocols. Common sense guideline have always been in place such as if you are sick or with a fever do not come to the office. I cannot think of another step we can take to ensure your safety and the staff’s safety and to reduce the chance of transmission of COVID - 19. Your health and safety is of utmost concern and is in excellent hands. No one at our office would have it any other way. Just as with previous financial crises some of you may have had your business decimated or income negatively effected. As our valued guests please do not hesitate or be embarrassed to seek treatment or receive care. Please discuss that with us. We will take care of you! It is an honor to take care of everyone and look forward to seeing everyone back at the office. Stay healthy!

Before and after gum contouring

Gum Contouring

Too much gum tissue can visibly affect the symmetry and balance of your smile, making it look "gummy" and the teeth small.

Dr. Art Carpenter can even out your gum line so it enhances rather than detracts from your smile, with a simple gum contouring procedure.

Why should you consider gum contouring at our Kenilworth, IL, dental practice?

Maximize The Beauty Of Your Teeth

A heavy gum line can undermine the aesthetics of even the most stunning teeth. Teeth whitening, orthodontics, and other cosmetic procedures can only improve so much when the proportions of your gums are off. Fortunately, we can create a harmonious balance between your gums and teeth and maximize the aesthetics of your pearly whites with laser gum contouring.

How do I know if I am a candidate for gum contouring?

Designing Your Custom Treatment Plan

During your initial consultation at our Kenilworth office, talk to us about any concerns you have about your teeth and the goals you have for your smile. Dr. Carpenter sets aside time to meet with every patient individually and create their personalized treatment plan.

While gum contouring can be performed as a standalone treatment, we often combine the procedure with other forms of cosmetic dentistry as part of a full smile makeover. Contouring, done in conjunction with teeth whitening or porcelain veneers, produces more dramatic results that highlight the full effect of the treatments.

Gum Contouring Timeline

Dr. Carpenter can typically complete a cosmetic gum contouring procedure in one visit to our Kenilworth dentistry practice. Here is what to expect during treatment...

Consultation

Dr. Carpenter will assess your oral health to make sure you are a good candidate for treatment. We will first address any underlying tooth or periodontal conditions before moving onto cosmetic dentistry.

Anesthetic

When you arrive for your gum contouring procedure, we begin by administering a local anesthetic to numb your mouth. If you are particularly nervous or sensitive, ask Dr. Carpenter about sedation dentistry to ensure relaxation throughout the entire process.

Reshaping

Dr. Carpenter then slowly removes your excess tissue from each tooth to reshape your gum line. We strive to make our periodontal treatments as conservative as possible and remove the least amount of tissue to achieve proper balance and the desired effects.

Finishing Touches

The entire procedure usually takes between one to two hours. Some minor side effects are common but should subside within a few days.  Make sure to follow Dr. Carpenter's instructions on recovery to ensure the best final results.

Minimal Pain and Risk

While the procedure may sound a little scary, it is actually relatively painless. We use high-tech tools including modern dental lasers that speed up the process and minimize the amount of trauma caused to the gums, which reduces the extent of side effects. Overall, the gum contouring is a safe and low-risk dental procedure that involves a small amount of downtime and recovery.

Caring for Your Gums After Treatment

Pain Management

During the first few days following your gum contouring procedure, your gums will likely feel sore and swollen. We recommend resting the day of your procedure to allow your body to focus on healing. Most patients are able to manage any discomfort using over-the-counter pain medication.

Diet

For the first week, you should avoid eating hard or spicy food which can irritate your gums during healing. Cool, soft foods are more gentle on your gums and will help you avoid any additional oral discomfort.

Dental Hygiene

It is important to maintain a good oral hygiene routine after a gum contouring procedure. However, until your gum tissue has healed, you should be gentle while brushing or flossing the treated areas. Using a saline rinse is a good way to remove food debris from your gums and keep them healthy while you heal.

Flexible Financing

CareCredit

While gum contouring is sometimes performed to treat periodontal disease, it usually is not covered by insurance when chosen for cosmetic purposes. However, our Kenilworth practice does give you options to help make your procedure more affordable. We offer flexible financing plans including CareCredit® allowing patients to make little to no interest monthly payments on their treatment.

"We have been coming to Dr. Carpenter for several years now after seeing dentists that lacked good patient relationships. Dr. Carpenter is patient with those who fear going to the dentist (that's me), explains what needs to be done and provides different options for treatment. Worth the trek from the city!"
