Protective Mouthguards and Oral Appliance Therapy

Dr. Art Carpenter provides custom mouthguards, nightguards and other oral appliances at his Kenilworth, IL, practice. These innovative devices are designed to suit the needs of a variety of patients, serving protective as well as therapeutic functions.

Our full-service family dental practice offers mouthguards for athletes of all ages, and provides oral appliance therapy to treat TMJ disorder, sleep apnea, and more. Each device is fully customized to fit your bite precisely and comfortably. During a consultation, Dr. Carpenter can determine if a custom mouthguard is right for you or your child.

About Mouthguards

Protecting your teeth from trauma is important. Mouthguards are an investment that helps athletes avoid the need for more costly restorative dental work. Sports-related injuries are a common cause of dental trauma, which can result in serious damage or tooth loss. Protective mouth guards are recommended for athletes of all ages who participate in contact sports such as football, soccer, baseball, and wrestling.

Our professional mouthguards provide far better protection than over-the-counter options.

The American Dental Association recommends children wear a mouth guard for most athletic activities, including equestrian sports, skiing, and skating. Because a proper fit is essential for effective dental protection, an over-the-counter mouthguard cannot provide the same benefits as professional mouthguards. Dr. Carpenter’s sports guards are custom-designed to fit precisely and provide effective, reliable protection.

Therapeutic Oral Appliances

We are dedicated to helping patients maintain optimal overall health as well as a beautiful smile. Our practice also provides custom devices for patients with disorders relating to their bite and oral health.

Patients who grind and clench their teeth (bruxism) can eventually suffer significant damage to teeth and the jaw. A nightguard or daytime mouthguard can provide protection for teeth while preventing the headaches that often accompany this condition.

The NTI-tss Plus™ nightguard offers an effective solution for temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder, a common condition with symptoms that include chronic headaches and other pain. Appliance therapy with NTI-tss Plus™ works to relieve stress on the jaw joints and suppress contraction of facial muscles. In our practice, we have seen this device provide significant pain relief to many patients.

Patients suffering from sleep apnea can also benefit from treatment with a special oral appliance. Dr. Carpenter prescribes the TAP® mouthpiece to alter the position of the jaw and keep the airway open during sleep. The device works to prevent snoring and interruptions in breathing. Many patients find it very effective, and vastly preferable to more invasive and cumbersome sleep apnea treatment techniques.

We also provide the Essix® appliance for dental implants patients. This clear plastic retainer can be designed to hold temporary prosthetic teeth during the healing period that follows implant placement.

"We have been coming to Dr. Carpenter for several years now after seeing dentists that lacked good patient relationships. Dr. Carpenter is patient with those who fear going to the dentist (that's me), explains what needs to be done and provides different options for treatment. Worth the trek from the city!"
