Our Offices Are Now Open

As we monitor the COVID-19 situation, we have updated our preventative measures to protect patients and staff.

View the: Enhanced Patient Protection Plan or call the office at (847) 251-5004  for more information.

Hope everyone is staying healthy and not been overly stressed with all the challenges we have all had over the last two months. Fortunately none of us or our families have had their health directly effected by COVID - 19. For those of you that have had any deaths or sickness in your family and friends we empathize with your pain or loss. For those of you that have had your livelihood and business effected and felt the humiliation and frustration of being told the hard work you have done to further your career and support yourself and your family is considered an extremely insulting term “non essential” we understand your frustration. What we are going through is not the “new normal” it is what we have to endure for now but we are all starting the road back to normalcy that we all crave.

We are considered essential healthcare business so we have been open and have seen many of you. We were only open to see patients with pain, infection, swelling and trauma. Under guidance from the Illinois Department of Public Health we are now clear to resume a full range of dental services. We will highlight temporary changes on the included overview page. We will have a backlog of patients for awhile so if you were one of the hundreds of our guests who had their appointments cancelled with no future appointment made we will be contacting you.

I realize more than ever that all of us at the office miss everyone dearly and it has been difficult not using the talents we have been given to serve you. I just turned 50 and now I definitely realize I am nowhere near retirement and not close to being ready. For now dropping into our office to talk, read magazines, grabbing a cup of coffee is not possible. Hugs and handshakes are gone for now too but we will not live in a dehumanized society void of human touch forever.

Since we are a small boutique dental office we are uniquely qualified to thrive during the shadow of COVID - 19. We are not a clinic so we do not see multiple patients at once and we have private enclosed treatment rooms. As a dentist I have always practiced under universal precautions so the steps we have always had the proper protocol in place but we are enhancing and taken further precautions above and beyond what the Center for Disease Control recommends. Your safety and our dedicated staff’s safety is and always will be our top priority.

It is understandable if some of you still have concerns or health issues that cause you concern. Feel free to ask any questions about our cleanliness and enhanced infection control protocols. Common sense guideline have always been in place such as if you are sick or with a fever do not come to the office. I cannot think of another step we can take to ensure your safety and the staff’s safety and to reduce the chance of transmission of COVID - 19. Your health and safety is of utmost concern and is in excellent hands. No one at our office would have it any other way. Just as with previous financial crises some of you may have had your business decimated or income negatively effected. As our valued guests please do not hesitate or be embarrassed to seek treatment or receive care. Please discuss that with us. We will take care of you! It is an honor to take care of everyone and look forward to seeing everyone back at the office. Stay healthy!

Dental Options for TMJ Treatment

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders, known as TMD, are a common cause of chronic pain, including headache, neck and jaw pain. If you have TMD or believe you may be suffering from the disorder, you can receive qualified diagnosis and TMJ treatment at our dental practice in Kenilworth, IL. Many patients find significant relief from pain and other TMD symptoms with specialized dental treatment, including custom night guards.

The symptoms of TMD can be far-reaching and significant.

Causes of TMD

TMJ disorders affects over three million Americans. The exact cause of TMD is unknown, but there are many potential causes for the uncomfortable symptoms. Injuries to the joint, the jaw, or muscles of the head and neck can lead to TMJ disorders. Arthritis in the joint can also cause pain, as can irregular movement of the disk that cushions the ball and socket of the joint. Patients who grind or clench their teeth at night put pressure on the TMJs and surrounding muscles, and this may cause or exacerbate the condition. In addition, patients who have not received restorative work for damaged teeth can suffer from a misaligned bite that leads to TMD.

Common Symptoms

The pain and other symptoms of TMJ disorders can be debilitating for many patients. Pain in the head, neck or jaw often increases in times of stress, and is made worse by clenching the teeth. You may also feel pain in your shoulders and tenderness in your face. When opening your mouth, you may also experience discomfort in or near the ear.

In addition to pain, you may be suffering from TMJ disorders if you suffer from:

  • Clicking, popping or grating noises when opening and closing the mouth
  • Trouble opening the mouth wide (jaw stuck in open or closed position)
  • Difficulty chewing food (bite feels misaligned)
  • Swelling on one side of the face
  • Ringing in the ears
  • Toothaches or tooth damage

Many TMJ disorder patients find significant relief from symptoms with appliance therapy. Our patients have had great success, particularly with the custom-fit NTI-tss Plus™ dental appliance.

 About TMJ Treatment

Dr. Carpenter can diagnose TMJ disorders and offer effective treatment for patients. At your initial exam, your doctor will take digital x-rays, observe your bite, and check manually for signs of issues in the joint. You will receive a treatment recommendation, which may include appliance therapy or occlusal adjustment.

Many TMJ disorder patients find significant relief from symptoms with appliance therapy. Our patients have had great success particularly, with the custom-fit NTI-tss Plus™ dental appliance. Made of clear, odor-resistant, and specialized material, this night guard reduces joint strain, minimizes the load on the disk, and decreases facial muscle tension. Created to fit snugly to the contours of your teeth, the NTI-tss Plus™ suppresses muscle contraction by almost 70 percent, and also prevents teeth grinding.

If improper bite alignment is indicated, we may recommend bite corrections, or minor adjustments to the teeth to create a more harmonious jaw position. This may include removing sharp tips on the cusps of teeth, minor orthodontics, or placement of a dental crown or other restoration.

"We have been coming to Dr. Carpenter for several years now after seeing dentists that lacked good patient relationships. Dr. Carpenter is patient with those who fear going to the dentist (that's me), explains what needs to be done and provides different options for treatment. Worth the trek from the city!"
