Veneers

Worn, chipped, or discolored teeth can affect the overall look of your smile and make you feel self-conscious when talking or taking photos.

Veneers are extremely lifelike porcelain shells that cover cosmetic flaws and blend in beautifully with your surrounding features.

Dr. Art Carpenter has helped many patients at our Kenilworth, IL, office achieve life-changing results with porcelain veneers...

3 Reasons Why Veneers Are Increasingly Popular

Although there are many cosmetic dentistry treatments to choose from, veneers stand out for several reasons.

Cover Multiple Concerns at Once

While other cosmetic treatments are only designed to address one imperfection, porcelain veneers from our Kenilworth, IL, dental practice can conceal minor misalignment, chips and cracks, discoloration, minor gaps, and natural wear—all at once.

Achieve Long-Lasting Results

Veneers are made from medical-grade dental porcelain, a strong, stain-resistant material. Although dental veneers are wafer-thin, they are also incredibly sturdy. With proper at-home care and frequent visits to our office, your restorations can last for many years.

Improve Your Self-Confidence

Dr. Carpenter customizes each veneer to your facial features to ensure flattering, natural-looking results. Because we use high-quality porcelain that looks and feels just like a natural tooth, others will only notice how great your smile looks. By concealing flaws that previously made you self-conscious, you can feel more confident in virtually every area of your life.

What Are Dental Veneers?

These restorations are ultra-thin shells made of medical-grade porcelain. They are placed over the front surface of a damaged, worn, discolored, or misshapen tooth in a process that usually spans two appointments. During these appointments, Dr. Carpenter will review your concerns, evaluate your candidacy, prepare the affected tooth or teeth, take impressions, and send these impressions to a world-class ceramic lab.

There, an experienced ceramist will then create a custom restoration that looks, feels, and functions like a natural tooth. The final restoration will then be sent back to our Kenilworth, IL, office, serving Evanston and Glenview, where Dr. Carpenter will permanently place the dental veneer over the affected tooth.

Porcelain Has Shown Impressive Durability

According to research published by the British Dental Association, porcelain veneers have "very high" durability and success rates. The study suggested that as many as 95 percent of the restorations studied were still in good condition after 10 years.

Minimal & No-Prep Veneers

In addition to traditional porcelain veneers, we also offer minimal-prep veneers.

Minimal, or no-prep, restorations are exceptionally thin, meaning Dr. Carpenter can place them with little to no modification to the tooth's surface. This conservative process makes minimal-prep veneers a great option for patients who have worn or thinning tooth enamel or who desire a reversible option. However, no-prep options are not right for everyone, as their thin structure may not hide certain types of imperfections, such as severe discoloration.

Are There Alternatives Available?

While you may be hesitant to choose this treatment rather than undergo individual procedures to correct discoloration, misalignment, or cracks, it is important to consider the advantages of porcelain veneers.
fast

Faster Results

Since they cover the entire tooth, this option can address multiple issues like discoloration and unevenness all at once. Instead of needing individual treatments, these restorations can minimize your treatment timeline to achieving a brilliant smile.

Greater Longevity

There are less expensive cosmetic procedures available, including dental bonding. Bonding is widely used for many of the same tooth imperfections. However, it is important to know the material used for bonding does not have the same durability or lifelike qualities as porcelain.

Better Solution for Stains

While teeth whitening and other cosmetic dentistry treatments can correct or conceal surface blemishes, porcelain veneers are the preferred treatment for permanent imperfections that can affect the tooth, such as tetracycline stains, discoloration from internal bleeding, and stains caused by genetics. If you have a permanently stained or discolored tooth, porcelain restorations at our Kenilworth, IL, office are the surest way to conceal them.

10+ years and counting, won’t drive anywhere else. Always a pleasant experience and any post visit issues come with Doc offering his mobile number should something present a problem after hours. Kind of place you get there early just to catch up with the staff. On a recent visit I was also sent with some goodies for the kids in Cuba after mentioning I go there often. Beginnings of “Dentists Without Borders”.

Are You a Good Candidate for Porcelain Veneers?

During your consultation at our Kenilworth, IL, practice, Dr. Carpenter will conduct a detailed exam to determine whether you are a good candidate for porcelain veneers. As part of your exam, he will check for:

Sufficient Amount of Enamel

Before placing these restorations, Dr. Carpenter will need to remove a small amount of enamel. For this reason, you should have a healthy amount of remaining enamel to qualify.

Signs of Clenching or Grinding

Although the porcelain used to make these restorations is very strong, it is not unbreakable. If you grind or clench your teeth, you could easily fracture your new restorations. Conditions such as bruxism should be addressed before receiving this treatment.

Treatable Conditions

Porcelain veneers are a fast way to achieve a straighter-looking smile without braces. However, if you have severe malocclusion, you might benefit more from orthodontics or aligners

Your Level of Commitment

Because this option requires enamel removal, the procedure is typically irreversible. Although porcelain veneers can look and feel great for many years, they will need to be replaced at some point and require a lifetime commitment.

Good Oral Hygiene Habits

Although ceramic is resistant to stains and decay, your mouth needs to be properly cared for to prevent oral health issues. For the best results, we recommend regular visits to our office so that we can periodically evaluate the integrity of your restorations.

Preparing for Your In-Office Consultation

Before visiting our practice, make sure to identify which tooth or teeth you would like to cosmetically enhance. This will help Dr. Carpenter create a treatment plan that addresses your specific needs.

Also, do your best to ensure that you maintain good oral health. Although porcelain restorations can conceal dental imperfections, they cannot treat oral health issues. If you have cavities, infection, or gum disease, we will need to treat these as part of your preparation. Fortunately, we can handle nearly every concern in-office for streamlined care.

Take a look at the procedure...

The Typical Treatment Timeline

Evaluation

Dr. Carpenter will evaluate your oral health and perform an exam to make sure you have a healthy foundation to support cosmetic treatment. If needed, he will treat any existing cavities or gum disease prior to beginning your treatment.

Planning

Before preparing treatment areas, a dentist should conduct extensive planning to ensure that the case is perfect. As part of the planning process, Dr. Carpenter will complete a diagnostic wax-up. This model shows the dentist and the patient what the end results will look like. He will also use this wax-up to create an accurate mold.

Anesthesia

To ensure your comfort during the procedure, Dr. Carpenter will administer local anesthesia. Local anesthesia completely numbs the treatment area so you should feel no pain. If you are nervous about this step of the procedure, we can administer oral conscious sedation to help you feel more comfortable throughout your appointment.

Tooth Preparation

In order to make room for veneers, Dr. Carpenter will need to reduce the size of the teeth. We will remove the minimum amount of enamel (roughly the thickness of an eggshell) and only resize dentition with the final results in mind. If you choose minimal-prep veneers, this step might not be necessary.

Impressions

Next, Dr. Carpenter will take impressions of your mouth to send to our trusted lab. We will also provide information on the shade so the veneers match the color of your surrounding teeth.

Temporary Veneers

Dr. Carpenter will also use your wax-up to create temporary veneers. Temporary veneers will protect your teeth and keep them looking great while your permanent veneers are being fabricated. Because the temporaries will mimic your final results, they also allow you to preview your results, make alterations as necessary, and determine whether you are pleased with how they look. Once you are satisfied with your proposed results, Dr. Carpenter will send the final design to a trusted ceramic lab.

Fabrication

A ceramic artist will create your permanent restorations using the most lifelike, high-quality materials available. This process typically takes about two to three weeks. We remain in close contact with the laboratory during this time to refine the process as needed.
calendar-two-weeks-circle

Final Placement

When your final restorations are ready, you will come back to our office for your final appointment. Dr. Carpenter will carefully check the fit and feel of each restoration before bonding it permanently in place.

Our Patients Love Their Results

Many patients who are considering this treatment are worried that the results won't meet their expectations. But dental work has come a long way since the unnatural, bulky restorations that were common in the past.

Today, dentists use advanced planning methods and state-of-the-art materials to create veneers that have the same color, texture, and shine as your teeth. Properly executed, these restorations are virtually indistinguishable from your natural smile.

These natural-looking restorations can help your smile look brighter and younger, boosting your overall self-confidence.

We believe that every patient who wants veneers deserves to have veneers of the highest form, function, and aesthetics, and Dr. Carpenter and his team pride themselves on creating incredible effects–each and every time.

Tips for Maintaining Flawless Results

Aftercare is fairly simple. However, there are certain precautions you should take to prevent damage to your veneers. If you suffer from bruxism or temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder, you should wear a mouthguard while sleeping. Additionally, you should avoid:

  • Biting your fingernails
  • Chewing ice, pens, or other hard objects
  • Opening packages with your teeth

You will also need to maintain proper oral hygiene, which includes brushing and flossing regularly and undergoing twice-yearly dental check-ups.

Remember: Veneers Are Well Worth the Cost

Few cosmetic dentistry treatments can offer the kind of comprehensive results provided by porcelain veneers. These benefits include:

Comprehensive

Long-Lasting

Unlike dental bonding, porcelain is highly stain-resistant and can last for years with proper care.

Lifelike

Dental ceramic is able to mimic the light-reflecting properties of natural teeth for an incredibly lifelike effect.
