Teeth Whitening  Can Even Improve Your Confidence

61 percent of study participants were perceived as more confident after having their teeth whitened.

A study conducted for Crest®, titled "The Impact of Whiter Teeth on Key First Impressions," measured how a brighter smile could directly affect professional and social interactions. Results showed that 61 percent of the study participants were perceived as more confident after having their teeth whitened.

More Reasons to Consider Whitening

For most patients, it is impossible to avoid stained and discolored teeth. Our smile naturally loses its brightness from daily wear, age, and even what we eat and drink. To help you achieve the whiter smile you want, Drs. Art Carpenter and Sejal Jobalia offer advanced teeth whitening treatments at their Kenilworth, IL, practice. With professional teeth whitening, you can achieve better results than with over-the-counter treatments. You can also choose between in-office and take-home treatments to conveniently achieve your optimal shade at your own pace.

The Truth about Discoloration

In many cases, teeth whitening can brighten your smile up to eight shades.

Most tooth stains are located on the surface of the enamel. These stains are often caused by what we eat and drink, including substances such as coffee, tea, red wine, berries, and tobacco. Surface stains are often very easily treated with whitening, responding well to the bleaching agents used.

In just one appointment you can achieve dramatic results. If you have an upcoming social event or simply want the satisfaction of instant results, in-office treatments may be the option for you.

However, teeth can also suffer from internal staining. These discolorations can result from certain medications, trauma to the tooth, and metal fillings that show through enamel. In addition, as teeth wear, enamel becomes thin and begins to show the natural yellow color of the interior dentin. Teeth whitening is not able to address internal stains or lighten the color of dentin. If you are concerned about internal staining, you may benefit from another cosmetic procedure, such as porcelain veneers, crowns, or dental bonding.

In-Office Whitening

In-office treatment usually requires a single, one-hour session.

Patients who want quick results can dramatically brighten their smile in a single visit with in-office whitening. A typical whitening session in the office takes about an hour. Using Opalescence Boost, Dr. Carpenter or Dr. Jobalia can brighten your teeth multiple shades, allowing you to leave our offices with a significantly brighter smile.

During an in-office session, one of our hygienists will first prep your teeth to remove any plaque or debris which could interfere with treatment. Then the doctor will carefully apply the whitening gel to the surface of your teeth. The gel stays in place for a set amount of time. Then your dentist will remove it and reapply a new layer. It typically takes three or four applications to achieve the desired results.

At-Home Whitening

At-home whitening is typically done over several weeks.

For patients who want to whiten their smile more gradually or have sensitive teeth, we can also provide customized take-home whitening kits. With these kits, you can whiten your teeth at your own pace. However, at-home kits use a weaker bleaching agent to protect your enamel. If you whiten your teeth at home, it will likely take a couple of weeks to achieve your desired results.

We will first craft a set of customized trays from impressions of your teeth. When you are ready to begin whitening, you will simply fill the trays with gel, place them over the tops of your teeth, and wear them for a predetermined amount of time.

Choosing the Right Option

Both in-office whitening and at-home kits achieve similar results and can dramatically enhance your smile. The right choice for you will depend primarily on how quickly you want results. Dr. Carpenter or Dr. Jobalia can assess your oral health during a consultation at our office and recommend the right system for you.

Typically, patients with dental sensitivity are more comfortable with at-home kits. However, if you clench or grind your teeth, you may find the take-home trays uncomfortable.

We have been coming to Dr. Carpenter for several years now after seeing dentists that lacked good patient relationships. Dr. Carpenter is patient with those who fear going to the dentist (that's me), explains what needs to be done and provides different options for treatment. Worth the trek from the city!
